meet the director
Yeura Venters serves as the Director of the Franklin County Public Defender Office in Columbus, Ohio. The organization’s mission is to provide comprehensive legal representation services in criminal, juvenile and custody proceedings to indigent persons in Franklin County so as to fulfill the constitutional mandate of “equal justice under the law.” Under his leadership, the office has not only continued to provide quality legal representation consistent with its mission, but has also expanded capacity in terms of the number of clients served. Their creative use of new information technology and professional support staff has greatly enhanced their cost efficiency and vastly improved their delivery of service.
Yeura has always adhered to the philosophy that “to truly be effective in one’s advocacy on behalf of clients, advocacy must extend far beyond the confines of the courthouse”. Towards that end, he has served as Governor and Supreme Court appointee on numerous Statewide Commissions, as an advisory board member for various legal and community service organizations, lectured at seminars, and participated in Task Force activities and discussions which impact Court functioning and client services.
Originally from Texas, Yeura received his B.A. degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and his J.D. from Capital University School of Law in Columbus. He is married to attorney Ellen Venters and has two sons - the oldest licensed to practice law in Texas and Ohio, and the youngest, licensed to practice in Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
